Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest and the fifth-largest city of Peru. It is also the capital city of the Loreto Region and Maynas Province. Located in the Amazon Basin, the city is along the Amazon, Nanay and Itaya rivers. Its name in Iquito language translates to the people. The city proper with its four districts has a population of 422,055; 462,783 live within the Iquitos Metropolitan Area, making it in the sixth-largest metropolitan area of the country. The official city nickname is Capital of the Peruvian Amazon.

Santa Rosa is an Amazonian town in the Mariscal Ramón Castilla Province in the Loreto Region of Peru, located in an island in the Amazon River in front of the cities of Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil). The town serves as a checkpoint and crossing point for the Brazil-Peru and the Brazil-Colombia borders.

Fast Boat from Santa Rosa to Iquitos

Speed boats are a fast option for travelling to Iquitos in 13 hours. The price is 200 Soles or 80 USD and they leave from Santa Rosa Island (In front of Leticia) at 3:00 Am. We normally recommend to stay a prior day in Santa Rosa or get a taxi at 2:00 Am and go to Tabatinga Fera to take a boat to the island.

They will include a lunch and you will be arriving to Iquitos at 4:00 PM. There are 3 different companies Transtur – Golfinho – Flipper and they from Tuesdays to Sundays. No service on monday.

Ferry or Slow Boat from Santa Rosa to Iquitos

The ferries or slow boat to Iquitos from Santa Rosa are the cheapest way to travel but it’s a really dirty adventure. Those boats are officialy for cargo but the second floor they used it to hang hammocks and transport people. The price is 80 Soles per person and you will have to bring your own hammock.

This boat will include meals from the second day and it will take 4 days to take to Iquitos. They depart at 8:00 pm from Santa Rosa Island everyday unless Thursdays (No service). We would recommend to bring your own filtered water and some snacks.
